The SFU Donation Challenge: Final Results

The SFU Donation Challenge is very pleased to announce the final results of our clothing donation drive at SFU.

Over the last two weeks, we have collected the following number of items:

- 86 miscellaneous (hats, scarves, gloves, etc...)
- 25 bags/purses/backpacks
- 19 pairs of shoes
- 509 clothing items!!!

These results are extremely good! The SFU community really rose to the challenge we put forth and made a huge difference for the youth of Covenant House. Our main point of contact at Covenant House was really impressed with the number of donations and the generosity of SFU. For those of you who donated, thank you!

Just as important as the number of donations, we believe that this event has helped increase awareness about the struggles of at-risk youth in BC and the great work that Covenant House is doing to address these issues. This blog has gotten almost 600 views at the time of writing this and The SFU Donation Challenge was featured on many official SFU Twitter and Facebook pages. We hope that people have been getting the message and will consider donating to Covenant House BC in the future.

We would like to thank Covenant House BC, and specifically our contact Mark Savard, for working with us over the Summer. We would also like to thank our sponsors: Club Ilia, Nature's Garden, Nester's Market, Azzi's Hair Studio, and the SFU Bookstore. Finally, we would like to thank everyone who donated or helped spread the word about the SFU Donation Challenge. You have helped make a real difference in the lives of many people with your generosity.

The SFU Donation Challenge Lives On!

Great News!

The SFU Donation Challenge is being extended for an additional week. The event will now be winding down on July 20th, as opposed to July 13th. This will give everyone who has been unable to donate clothing so far a chance to do so.

We already have permission from SFU Burnaby to keep our boxes on campus, and were hoping to hear back from SFU Surrey soon. Remember, look for the blue or yellow box to donate your clothing to Covenant House BC!

The SFU Donation Challenge Status Report: Day 2

Below, we share our experiences from the first two days of the SFU Donation Challenge.

Day One:

The first day of SFUDC was quite hectic. On day one we hauled each of our five clothing donation boxes to all of our drop-off locations around the SFU campuses. As one might expect, we got some strange looks from observers and passers-by. One man even exclaimed "What the HECK is that thing?" as I carried our donation box into the SFU Surrey campus!

In case you missed it, we decided to change the locations of some of our donation boxes. Please make sure you read our updated list of donation box locations if you are planning on donating anything this week because of the changes.

After setting up the boxes, we spent some time preparing for our information session and raffle draw on day two.

That pretty much summarizes day one.

Day Two:

The second day of SFUDC was mostly devoted to our information session and our raffle draw. If you were at SFU Burnaby on Tuesday, you may have seen our table in the Saywell Hall Atrium, right next to Renaissance Coffee. Understandably, we did not see a ton of traffic, presumably because it's SFU's summer semester and the weather was beautiful. However, we still had encouraging chats with some SFU students and faculty. Best of all, near the end of our information session we received a lovely visit from Mark Savard, the Development Officer of Community Giving at Covenant House BC.

After the information session, we took a walk around campus to check up on our donation boxes. To our disappointment, two out of the four boxes at SFU Burnaby were completely empty. We hope that people are just waiting until the last few days to donate because, let's face it, university students excel at procrastinating

Consequently, we have decided to kick our marketing efforts up a notch. We're going to be more active on Twitter and Facebook this week and will hopefully be getting more help from SFU social media page/account admins. We want those empty boxes to be so full at the end of the week that the donations won't stay in and they will obstruct people in the hallways!

10 Helpful (and Not so Helpful) Tips for Clothing Donation Week

As clothing donation week approaches, we decided to create some helpful tips for everyone who will be donating clothing from July 9th to July 13th.

1) Bring all of your clothing donations to school in one trip. Just stuff your duffel bag with as much clothing as you can carry - even if you have to drag it to school. Remember, by donating clothing you are showing everyone that you are a charitable person. They won't mind if they can't get on the bus because your donations are taking up most of the available space. They know it's for a good cause!

2) Make sure that the girl or guy you like is watching when you drop off your clothing donations. They will see that you are a generous person, which will inspire them to ask you out.

3) We know that some of you are so eager to donate your clothing, it's difficult to hold back your excitement. Just remember that spontaneously stripping down to your underwear in the AQ and donating your clothes, literally off your back, is not necessary. Please refrain from doing this!

4) Please do not move or tamper with the clothing donations boxes around the SFU Burnaby and Surrey campuses. While an SFU Donation Challenge clothing donation box would be great to have at parties and to show to your grandchildren some day, remember, these boxes are there to help at-risk youth.

5) Donating clothing is a great way to improve your Karma. If supernatural forces have got you down, you might want to consider making a few donations to increase your good fortune.

6) If you don't donate your unwanted clothes, these items will probably just be stolen by the Underpants Gnome's distant cousins anyway. (Bear in mind, nobody wants your old underwear. Please do not donate them!)

7) Remember this week isn't just about donating clothing. It's also about increasing awareness of the struggles of homeless and at-risk youth in the Lower Mainland. Tell your friends about Covenant House Vancouver and come to our information session / raffle draw on Tuesday at SFU Burnaby and Thursday at SFU Surrey. There's going to be great prizes and maybe even a celebrity or two (probably not).

8) Keep in mind that all donated clothing will be going to youth aged 16-24. Unless you would wear your grandfather's moth-eaten trousers or your great great aunt's pantaloons, don't donate them.

9) Remember to actually donate the clothing that you were planning on donating next week. Place your donations in your back pack the night before, write a note on your calendar, or tattoo a reminder on your forehead so you'll remember to donate when you brush your teeth - whatever it takes. You'll be saved the shame of giving some lame excuse when people ask you how many clothing items you donated.

10) Tell your friends about The SFU Donation Challenge because they will envy your knowledge of the coolest events at SFU. Heck, you should even tell strangers about SFUDC. True fact: there is no better conversation starter than "Have you heard about the clothing donation drive at SFU?"

If you found these tips useful, make sure to let other SFU students know about them as well. We are really looking forward to donation week and hope everyone will get involved with this great cause!
